Moving Closer to the Finish Line-Walgreens Space Coast Dragon Boat Festival presented by PepsiCo


It was a beautiful spring day at Manatee Sanctuary Park for The Walgreens Space Coast Dragon Boat Festival presented by PepsiCo. The event was an exciting and delightful time with approximately 500 people in attendance. The action packed dragon boat races are all about working together and this year twenty-two teams came out to compete in the world’s fastest growing water sport. Each boat comprised of twenty paddlers moving in unison, combining strength with teamwork moving toward the finish line.

Walgreens has been a proud supporter and national sponsor of JDRF for over 20 consecutive years and this year Walgreen’s chose JDRF to be its charitable partner for the festival. To date, Walgreens has raised over $100, 000 for the JDRF Central Florida Chapter and as of fall 2013, has raised over $4.6 million dollars nationwide towards T1D research.

The day also proved to be a wonderful time for outreach and raising awareness of T1D within the community. JDRF staff and volunteers had the opportunity to chat with families attending the event who’s friends and loved ones have been diagnosed with type one. All of the support and encouragement is truly inspirational as we continue to fight for a cure.

Just as each team participating in the Dragon Boat Festival worked together to make it to the finish line, we also have to work together in the fight against type one diabetes. By raising awareness, continuing outreach, and raising money toward T1D research, then TOGETHER we can move closer to the finish line of turning type one, into type none.
